Hardy vs Tropical: What are the common types of water liy ?

Updated: May 17, 2024

  1. Tropical water lily: Flower blooming is often in the southern part of India compared to the other type (hardy water lily). The leaves are comparatively thin and have pointed/uneven edges. Flowering happens even if it is grown in small containers comparatively. The delicate plant is more prone to extreme sunlight and leaf-consuming organisms.

  2. Hardy water lily: Flowers are bigger and more beautiful, but their bud formation and blooming are comparatively less in South India. But, in a few cases, it shows better results in the Northern part of India. It prefers large areas for its growth and flowering. Leaves are thicker and have a very neat finish on their edges. Rhizome formation can be quite quicker compared to the tropical lily varieties. The overall plant is stronger and hence less prone to damage.
