What to do after planting of Lotus/Water lily ?

Updated: Feb 13, 2024

  • The tub/container is to be placed where there is direct/unfiltered sunlight for at least 4 hours each day.

  • Fishes to keep the water neat and clean. Guppy fish are preferred as their local breeds do not require any extra feed.

  • Water does evaporate during extreme summer conditions. Keep filling the container full during such situations.

  • Also, keep removing just the old leaves carefully unharming its base which can increase flowering as the plant needs only around 3-4 big leaves in case of waterlily at a time for flowering.

  • Small shell snails, green algae etc. are part of any water garden. Do not panic, instead keep removing them manually (hand pick & discard) rather than doing any chemical treatments.

  • Floating plants like Azolla, duckweed, water cabbage etc. can be grown in your lotus/water lily tub, but do not let completely cover the lily/lotus leaves and cover the water surface. Do discard them along with the snail shells.

  • We do not recommend planting different waterlily/lotus varieties in the same tub, as the roots touching each other can reduce flowering. However, a few varieties may be compatible and you can always experiment in your garden.

  • Your water lily is delicate and prone to many dangerous small organisms as well. Do make rounds and keep observing your plant for its long life.
